Clary Sage is a herbal oil with relaxing, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressive and antispasmodic properties. It’s most common use is as a uterine tonic, diluted in carrier oil and massaged into the stomach to help relieve the symptoms of problem periods. It’s also used frequently to aid in starting labour for late babies by adding 10 or so drops to a warm bath. For these reasons, it should never be used in early pregnancy, and should be avoided right up until a couple of weeks before the due date.

Clary sage can enhance the effects of alcohol and both recreational and prescription medication , so care should be taken if taking medicine which makes you drowsy or drinking alcohol. It should only be used in pregnancy once full term is reached, and should be avoided when breast feeding. It is safe for use with children over the age of 2, subject to dilution prior to skin contact as with all essential oils.
